Zap! Just as you type the last few words of your winning business proposal, the power goes out – and takes your work with it. This doesn’t have to happen. Protect yourself from such mishaps with a low-cost uninterruptible power supply (UPS), which keeps your PC running when the power goes down.

Many of the random system crashes you might have encountered in the past were probably imperceptible power fluctuations that an UPS can eliminate altogether. UPS’s aren’t glamorous, but they’re the least expensive insurance policy you can buy against power outages. They constantly monitor and massage the lifeblood of your PC –to make your system run smoother. When the power goes out, a UPS gives you the time to save files and shut down.

The effects of power problems range from the subtle-keyboard lockups, hardware degradation-to the dramatic-complete data loss or burnt motherboards. There are 5 different power fluctuations:

Sags or Brownouts: are short-term decreases in voltage levels. This is the most common power problem.
Blackouts: Total loss of power.
Spikes or Impulse: is a dramatic increase in voltage. Like the force of a title wave, a spike can enter electronic equipment and damage or completely destroy components.
Surge: Short term increase in voltage, typically lasting at least 1/120 of a second.
Noise: technically Electro-Magnetic Interference and Radio Frequency Interference, electrical noise disrupts the smooth sine wave one expects from utility power.

Remember, a UPS is battery operated and won’t run forever. When you hear the beep go to your computer close down the programs and turn off your system.
