Xmas Holidays

Many businesses are confused about which holidays fall under the Employment Standards Act for the Province of Ontario as paid public holidays.

Under the law Ontario has eight paid public holidays:

l New Years Day      l Labour Day

l Good Friday                l Thanksgiving Day

l Victoria Day                 l Christmas Day

l Canada Day                l Boxing Day (Dec 26)

To qualify for a paid public holiday, a full-time or part-time worker must meet three conditions. You must have:

  • Been employed for three months or more, and
  • Earned wages on at least 12 days during the four work weeks before the holiday, and
  • Worked on your regularly scheduled day before and on your regularly scheduled day after the holiday.

ALL of the rules listed above must apply. If any point does not apply, then qualifications are not met for a paid public holiday. Some workers do not quality for paid public holidays even if they meet these rules.

Xmas may have three (3) paid holidays!
